How to Write an HVAC Job Description

For example,  a job title and summary for an open HVAC Technician position could look something like this:

  • HVAC Installer Technician Responsible for completing assigned jobs, installations and repairs according to their position, including but not limited to necessary calls on after hours and weekends.

Use industry-standard language because job seekers are going to be searching for those specific terms. Creativity in a job posting can help but it can also hurt, especially in the job title. Remember, you want your job listing to be easily discoverable.


Job Responsibilities

By including primary job responsibilities, candidates are made aware of how each task factors into the overall success of the business. This gives candidates a clear picture of which tasks they are expected to perform on a daily basis.  

Once you have identified the job responsibilities, list them in bulleted form by importance. For instance, your first bullet would be the job’s most important duty, followed by the next important task. A minimum of 6 bullets is recommended. 

A clear, concise job description can help to attract the best candidates for the position and weed out those that are not qualified.

  • An HVAC technician’s primary job responsibilities include repairing and/or installing new units. Responsibilities include:

    • Conducting routine maintenance checks to ensure optimal system performance
    • Responding to emergency service calls
    • Maintaining accurate documentation
    • Communicating with customers to provide updates and recommendations for system improvements

Requirements and Qualifications: 

Ideal techs need to possess a mix of soft and hard skills to be successful. Hard skills include technical knowledge through training and experience, while soft skills encompass personality traits such as communication, dependability and empathy. 

Not only do you want a tech that knows the ins and outs of HVAC equipment, you need a tech that can communicate effectively with the customer and encourage additional sales. 

Hard skills are necessary to perform the technical part of the tech position, while soft skills ensure an effective and functional work environment. The best techs are skilled at both!

List the required qualifications and experience for the role, such as:

    • Physical ability to lift heavy equipment and work in confined spaces
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Certification in HVAC installation and repair
    • Completion of an HVAC apprenticeship or technical school program
    • Experience with a variety of HVAC systems, including boilers, furnaces, and air conditioners
